  It starts out healthy enough — or, seemingly so. Maybe you started by cutting out processed foods. Then desserts. Then sugar. Then meat. Maybe you switched to all organic and while you were at it, went gluten-free and wheat-free. In a culture that has gone health-food crazy, it’s easy to see how some people can take a “healthy” diet to an unhealthy extreme. For some, it’s a short-lived stage that ricochets into a junk food rebellion. Others find their way back to the middle of the road. But for many, this so-called “healthy” way of eating can become a true obsession and, at its most extreme, an eating disorder known as orthorexia. I was diagnosed with Anxiety Disorder in 1994 in the seventh year of my recovery from addiction, by a specialist in the field. I know I’m not the only one. Many of us deal with the debilitating symptoms of anxiety at different times in our lives. For a few years medication helped to blanket my brain with the chemicals it didn’t produce on its own. With the help of this medication and coupled with psychotherapy , I committed myself to healing. Sessions started weekly, then monthly, and eventually, to carrying my therapists number in my pocket just in case. Time frame in healing is as individual as recovery. For me, I needed the support of a twelve step program, a concentrated nutrient dense food plan to follow, psychotherapy, a psychiatrist for medication modification, all complimenting each other, to become healthy in mind body and spirit. There was a time when my recovery was confined to 12 step meetings in my own home group in my own little town, in my own corner of the world. That corner of the world would be Ireland, for those of you who have no idea who I am. Initially I didn’t really notice that the recovery rooms I frequented were full of the same faces with the same stories day after day. So eager was I to “get it” that I spent every ounce of energy I possessed soaking up what all these remarkable people had to say. What I heard was solid, unwavering recovery at its very best. Our vision of beauty! Why has it turned so ugly?

Like most people, I like to look my best. For me looking my best coincides, or in fact begins with, feeling my best. Pre recovery I’d try to make myself feel good by obsessing over my appearance. Endless buying of clothes, sweating at the gym and purchasing of miracle creams ensued to summon up even a tiny amount of self-worth. No matter how hard I worked on myself in a physical sense, it left me feeling even more destitute and empty. But now being all wise and recovered and spiritual, I see clearly that I had it all backwards. I’ve written before about my cleansing of all things body shaming from my surroundings. No fashion magazines! No advertising for extreme abs or rock hard butts, nor images of wrinkle, eye bag and cellulite free gods and goddesses allowed within 500 meters of our home.
