Why Breathe? Silly question. You know- that dying thing. But what I mean here is – why breathe with consciousness, with intention, with volume? Why breathe deeply, deliciously, divinely? Breathing in a healthy deep manner can help heal your body, mind and spirit. It does this in several ways; cleansing, calming, recalibrating and revitalizing. Here are some principle benefits from learning and practicing a slow deep breath. The breath is one of the five ways that the body rids itself of toxins. It is beneficial to exhale deeply slowly and completely (not to the point of dizziness or exhaustion) but enough. This will allow the toxins to be removed from the nooks and crannies of the deepest recess of your lungs. A slow deep breathing rhythm can improve your cardiovascular system, lowering the blood pressure and increasing heart function. Holiday Depletion or Restoration; Finding a Balance – Kyczy Hawk

The holidays are coming! The holidays are coming! These words can strike anguish and fear, or excitement and anticipation. Or all of the above.  There can be feelings of gratitude and generosity, grief, guilt or anger. My childhood, my memories and my dreams can color my hopes for the upcoming six weeks. It takes attention and intention to avoid depleting my energy in frenetic preparation and to find moments to restore my mind, body and spirit to sanity. Yoga, meditation and breathwork help immeasurably to help me identify feelings of exasperation, excess and exhaustion. Any one of these, and any two together, much less three throw me out of balance and into a dangerous condition of pre-relapse mode.
